Free loop space and homology

The aim of this paper is to explain the relationship between the (co)homology of the free loop space and the Hochschild homology of its singular cochain algebra. We introduce all the relevant technical tools, namely simplicial and cyclic objects, and we provide the various steps of the proofs, which are scattered around in the literature. This paper can be seen as a companion to the paper “Cycl...

Positive Ricci Curvature on Highly Connected Manifolds

For k ≥ 2, let M4k−1 be a closed (2k−2)-connected manifold. If k ≡ 1 mod 4 assume further that M is (2k−1)-parallelisable. Then there is a homotopy sphere Σ4k−1 such that M]Σ admits a Ricci positive metric. This follows from a new description of these manifolds as the boundaries of explicit plumbings.

Highly connected manifolds with positive Ricci curvature

We prove the existence of Sasakian metrics with positive Ricci curvature on certain highly connected odd dimensional manifolds. In particular, we show that manifolds homeomorphic to the 2k-fold connected sum of S × S admit Sasakian metrics with positive Ricci curvature for all k. Furthermore, a formula for computing the diffeomorphism types is given and tables are presented for dimensions 7 and...

The Cohomology Ring of the Free Loop Space of a Wedge of Spheres and Cyclic Homology

We investigate the cohomology of the free loop space of a one point union of a three-sphere with itself. The even dimensional subalgebra is not free and relations are presented explicitly. This algebra may also be identified as the cyclic homology of a “null algebra”. L’anneau de cohomologie de l’espace de lacets libres d’un bouquet de sphères et l’homologie cyclique. Résumé – Nous étudions l’a...

Topological Hochschild Homology of Thom Spectra and the Free Loop Space

We describe the topological Hochschild homology of ring spectra that arise as Thom spectra for loop maps f : X → BF , where BF denotes the classifying space for stable spherical fibrations. To do this, we consider symmetric monoidal models of the category of spaces over BF and corresponding strong symmetric monoidal Thom spectrum functors. Our main result identifies the topological Hochschild h...
